Congratulations on your engagement! As someone who is recently engaged, one of the first thoughts on my mind after my special someone popped the question was, “What do I do first?” Aside from the obvious wanting to tell my loved ones, I didn't want to make a misstep in this BIG life moment. Let these guidelines help you navigate this exciting stage!

Share the News

After you’ve had the chance to gush over your fiancé or fiancée and admire your ring finger awkwardly for a little too long, share the amazing news with your family and friends. Although there is no "one size fits all" way to tackle this step, be sure to let the most special people in your life know before making your announcement public. Not only do mom and dad deserve to hear the news face-to-face, but getting to see their reaction is priceless! If letting your nearest and dearest know in-person isn't possible, give them a phone call or FaceTime session. As for the rest of the world, social media can be the easiest way to spread the word quickly. From a fun selfie to a candid shot of the proposal there are tons of ways announce your engagement!

MAE's Tip: There are endless places to get inspiration for announcing your engagements. Check out this list of creative ideas to help you find your perfect reveal!

Let it Soak in!

Pop that bottle of champagne because this is a huge life moment and decision! There is nothing more exciting than watching your dreams come true, but make sure you take some time to celebrate and savor the excitement. As a planner, I immediately wanted to begin the wedding planning process but quickly realized that I was becoming overwhelmed with the overload of information. Take some time to simply be engaged. Your other half has probably spent a lot of time keeping this a secret and is dying to just live in the moment! Whether you plan a night out or would rather stay in, it is important to enjoy each other and celebrate this special time.

Let Yourselves Daydream

Whether you've spent mere hours envisioning your wedding or have always dreamt of this day, now is the time to bring this vision to real terms. Your spouse-to-be may have some ideas of their own, so have an open discussion about what your ideal wedding will be like together. There are millions of places to gather inspiration, from wedding magazines to searching #weddinginspo on Instagram.

MAE's Tip:  One great way to get inspired and gather information for your own wedding is Pinterest. It is important to remember that your ‘dream wedding’ Pinterest board is viewable to the general public so be sure to switch this to ‘secret’! Very Important: It can be easy to go overboard on Pinterest, so before repinning everything you love, definitely be mindful of your budget and overall wedding vision. It will also save you time down the road if you categorize your Pinterest wisely by wedding events and details.

Begin Planning Together

In order to get the planning process rolling, some questions need to be answered early on. Whether you plan on having an intimate affair or know you’ll be going big or going home, guest count is an important aspect to consider. Get input from both families in this matter, regardless of who will be footing the bill. One of the most important details is your budget which will be the catalyst to the planning process and will affect everything from venue options to your wedding day entertainment. Be realistic about how much money you will have available to spend, especially when broken down into each wedding category. Once you’ve determined the size of your guest list and your budget parameters - the fun of wedding planning can really begin - decide with your future spouse which aspects are most important to you, and go from there.

MAE's Tip: Prioritize your budget and guest list, the sooner you do the sooner your planner will be able to find the best options within your needs for each of your wedding details!
